Good afternoon everyone! I was approached by a friend today who is just beginning her journey in Illustrator with the pen tool. She is an amazing artist and just designed a logo for a client. However, she needed help drawing it in Illustrator. She came to me for help and I agreed to draw it for her.
I consider myself an advanced user of the Pen tool. When I first started using the tool I hated it with every ounce of energy in my body. Now, as a successful graduate, I am proud to say I’m in love with the Pen tool.
Below, you’ll find a easy, step by step tutorial on how to draw a simple shape in Illustrator! If you have any questions, leave a comment and I’ll try to help!
First off, this is the shape we will be redrawing in Illustrator. Feel free to right click and save.
Step 1: Select the Pen tool. I find it easier to draw with just an outline, normally with a bright color so I can see it better.
Step 8, 9 and 10:
Notice in “Step 10,” or the 3rd image, how your line goes a little crazy? Don’t fret! I promise it will be an easy fix. Just continue to draw the rest of the shape!
And now that the shape is finished, you can fix the mess ups! Click on the “Convert anchor point” tool. You’ll be able to fix any point or direction with this tool. Use the “Direct Selection” (white arrow) tool to click on the anchor point you wish to fix. Once it’s selected, use the “convert anchor point” tool. If you click directly on the anchor point, the direction points will disappear and you’ll be left with a sharp/corner point.
Switch the shape to be filled by a color, and check your work! Happy pen drawing!
